Iron Man Review (PSP)
May 13th, 2008Iron Man is a mixed bag. I will firmly say that it is NOT worth the suggested retail price of $30. Lucky for me I found it at Best Buy online for $20 (as seen in previous post). The quality is mediocre, controls can be frustrating and you had better have seen the movie or it will make little sense.
The first level is really bad and had me scared that I had just wasted $20. The second level showed promise and was 100% more enjoyable. In the second level you learn to hover, fly, use afterburners, weapons systems and energy flow. Flying is fun, though difficult to control. Afterburners are awesome. Also hovering and taking out ground troops is very cool. Fighting other flying objects feels stiff as they just kind of hang there. I will say I like the mechanic of controlling the suits energy flow. You can put more energy into propulsion for afterburners, weapons for chest beam or armor to reduce damage. It takes a couple seconds for your suit to adjust which for me makes it more realistic.
By the third level you get the red suit and choice of 3 weapons: Gatling gun for quickly mowing done foot soliders, Rockets for taking out vehicles with one shot or Repulsor Beam that is in between (weapons upgrade with each level). You can also drop out of flying and drop into a floor punch with other moves that will come later. The game becomes pretty fun by now. You move through open areas where you have multiple enemies at various levels and you will fly, hover, duck behind cover, dodge and shoot. Then find underground bunkers where the space narrows into run and gun then back to open areas. The boss in this level is a huge vehicle with giant EMP pulse that has you flying out of range then moving in to take out weapon platforms. Not bad.
You can go back and play any level over and also choose which suit you want to use….having choices is a good thing. Overall I would give this gave a solid C+ as it isn’t the best quality and the game has some issues but still has some good points. If you have seen the movie, a fan of the Iron clad hero or in desperate need for a new game (I’m all of the above) then pick it up but wait for a price drop or catch it on sale. It is not worth $30 of your hard earned cash but for $20 or less it is worth a try.
