Friday Morning Movie Madness: Wayne’s World (FM3)

May 2nd, 2008

Wayne’s World
1992
Directed by Penelope Spheeris
Starring Mike Meyers, Dana Carvey, Rob Lowe, Tia Carrere

So I’m thinking about the slew of comedies that have come out in the last few years. Some of them are pretty funny, most of them are lame, all of them seem to be really vulgar in some fashion. It is a shame tha comedians seem to have forgot to how to be funny and be clean at the same time.

I was reminded of this as I watched the comedy Wayne’s World recently. Although it does have parts of lewdness (”SWING!”) For the most part the comedy is squeeky clean..especially compared to recent fair such as “Knocked up” or “Superbad.”

This movie is funny; in the way I like to see. It doesn’t take itself seriously, in the slightest, instead Wayne’s World has a surrealistic take on metal head slackers.

I mean, what other movie will a guy learn Cantonese in the matter of a day?

After seeing this movie as a young man, it reintroduced me to the term Party On. (I already regularly used “Excellent!” Because of a certain movie that stars a Bill and a Ted.) I also learned the lyrics to the previously unknown Queen song “Bohemian Rhapsody,” Lyrics I still know to this day.

One thing I have to admit, I think this movie is what made me take another look at Asian Women. I must say that Tia Carrere is extremely good looking in this flick and I understood Wayne’s fascination with her.

This movie is more of a series of vignettes stitched together with some semblance of an over arching plot. I assume this is a hold out from the days the Wayne’s World skit appeared on Saturday Night Live. With some movies this doesn’t work, with this movie it works well. This movie is still quoted among the people I know, especially when it coms to crass comercialism in the movie industry.

I would recommend that people see this movie, showing that comedy can be funny and relatively clean. It is a good counter point to the ultra lewd comedies that seem to flood our theaters at the moment.
