More Mushroom Men (Wii/DS)

March 19th, 2008

IGN has a great section with lots of Mushroom Men details.  One thing that really stands out is the idea of exploration and using items to develop your own weapons and tools.  It seems that a sense of exploration isn’t valued in a lot of games today and having been gaming since the Atari 2600 I can say that many games have that “been there done that feel” so it’s refreshing to think there are developers out there willing to do something different.

I also like the art style and cartoonish graphics in the line of Earth Worm Jim, Beyond Good and Evil and my beloved Warcraft.   As a matter of personal opinion I prefer a sense of fantasy than reality in gaming graphics.  It seems the closer games get to looking “real” the more I notice they aren’t and get taken out of the game world that was developed.  I live in reality, I want to play in fantasy.  This is fantasy.

So there are several aspects of the game that sound like fun to me like the exploration, item building, the dark sense of humor (bunnies in a fan…classic), the spore powers (comic book or magical powers are a must) and the aspect of playing as a 3 inch tall being.  Anyone that hasn’t lost or forgotten their childhood imagination can probably remember a time when those things found under the couch used to come to life.   Yes, the pen was mightier than the sword especially when it was a giant log rolling out of control having been released by members of C.O.B.R.A. but I digress.  Mushroom Men has the elements there to be new “classic” title but only time will tell if they can deliver.  I hope it is as fun as it looks and that Red Fly can translate their vision to code because there is only so much virtual bowling, Mario Galaxy and Guitar Hero I can play on the Wii before I want something different.  Please be something different.

After watching the video and reading the description, I must admit that the game does look awesome. If it can live up to the promises, it looks like a game I’d buy a wii for.

(Of course I’d get Mario, Zelda, and Samus with that same wii, but it is a game that could tip the scales for me.)

    It just looks like fun.
