Game Developers conference 2008
February 20th, 2008Just wanted to post a link to a page wrapping up the news from the GDC.
Some of the highlights that interest me are the annoucements concerning Fable 2 (Co-Op play with instantaneous drop in/drop out) and Too Human (Dark Sci fi/fantasy world with action oriented play.)
The announcement that has really interested me so far, however, is the announcement of the Xbox Live Creators Club.
Basically this is a service that will let user and community created content be uploaded/downloaded/bought/sold via Xbox live. Using the XNA Studio in combination with a Creators Club launcher. With both of these, one as the development tool and the other as the publishing tool, you can do all the above with your own game.
So basically it is a home publishing avenue for games made in, out, around, and through your home.
I’ve read criticism of this service already, although the service was just announced today, saying that “We can already do this on the PC.”
Well yeah…but the Xbox 360 isn’t the pc and it opens up a whole avenue for amateur content that wasn’t readily accessible before. Xbox Live is one of the easiest ways to get small games and demos to the masses and now it is open to everyone. Plus the games are suppose to be downloadable to any MS OS using product…like the Zune.
I’m sure it isn’t that easy (what is?) but the avenue is now open. It seems to me there are a few different sides to Microsoft: At least one evil empire side, the side that pushes crappy OS, and the gaming side.
I like the gaming side.
(As an aside, I think Sony is suffering from the same syndrom, however only recently did the Evil Empire side let the gaming side take the gaming department back over. *hugs psp*)
