Who is winning the next gen DVD format war?
December 31st, 2007Plain ol’ DVD is apparently.
Check out this article by the New York Times. Seems like most people are quite content with watching their movies via the old fashioned DVD standard.
I, for one, can understand why. Yes it is nice to watch a HD movie on an HD screen, but honestly the quality jump isn’t as great as, say, from VHS to DVD. There is no “Oh WOW that is SO MUCH BETTER” type of thinking; especially when you have to invest in so much hardware to really take advantage of it.
My guess is that the next gen of DVD will be more like the VHS/Betamax era: It’ll take years for one or the other, or both, formats to really take off and be something people have in every house.
Anyone remember when a VCR was to expensive to buy so people would rent them? From a local video rental store..you remember those right? Renting movies from a place where you went in, picked them out, then took them home for a limited amount of time.
Ah yes…how many things has the internet changed!
