Gamespot editor fired over bad review

November 30th, 2007

So I’m reading through my usual glut of gaming news this morning and I noticed a little article about a gamespot editor being fired over giving a game a bad review. See this wouldn’t be so bad (the review I mean) if the Kane and Lynch ads weren’t slathered all over the Gamespot site. What is even more amazing is this editor is one that has been there for over a decade; one of the editors I actually liked over at Gamespot. 10 years at one place and this is what you get?Axed because of corporate greed?

First click here to check out the article I’m referring to.

There are several links mentioned in this article, one to a video revew on youtube that is no longer up on Gamespot. I made sure to check this myself and I could not find the video review anywhere on the site…so it is, in fact, taken down.

Pretty cheesy eh?

This really is a blow for Gamespot; especially since I considered them one of the better web review sites out there. They always had good previews; seemed to do a fair job on reviewing games and always had plenty of content to keep a guy busy. Now I have to ask myself if I even want to read the site any longer. If I can’t trust a site to let their editors be honest; why should I be a patron? Should I spend my time at a site that is known for putting money first and employee’s second? You can’t make the money without people to work for you. If the consumer base can’t trust you, especially as a review site, then your going to loose readership. Readers are who pay the bills for you; so it is worth it to be honest and upright.

Gamespot made a very bad decision that is going to bite them in the butt. Eidos is involved to; but don’t worry I had no doubts about their corporate ways. Not like I’ve really bought any games from them. Used games maybe but not new; we all know companis hate the sale of used games so consider that me standing up to the man and not just being a really cheap gamer.

And I just want to point out to the fellow game reviewers here at Random Encounters: You will not be fired for writing a bad review of a game. I mean it’s not like you are getting paid anyway.

Speaking of, if Jeff G (the editor that was axed at Gamespot) needs another writing gig, I’d be happy to extend my hand! I can pay you nothing but hey we all gotta start somewhere right? I mean it looks like the last 10 years at Gamespot mean nothing.

I’d advise people to avoid the site from now on as a sort of protest. There are plenty of other places to get Game News out there; no need sullying your self on one that puts money a head of its own employees.
