Ergo Proxy (Anime)

November 13th, 2007

Just got through watching the anime series Ergo Proxy and thought it’s worth posting about.  It’s a dark sci-fi world that delves heavily into the psychology of the characters as they search for answers about what’s really happening in the domed city of Romdo and the secrets of the proxy.  You will follow the struggles of the trinity of main characters re-L Mayer (hot goth gunslinger), Vincent Law (unstable hero) and Pino (cute lovable sidekick).

The production value overall is very high with good animation, score and writing.  The story is fairly complex and at times you have to follow very closely.  The series starts out as a “who done it” and ends with a very lofty theological theme.  The mood of this anime is very dark and it isn’t afraid to kill off the people you meet but through it all hope fights to emerge.  Ergo Proxy also has a good mix of story, action and intrigue that I felt was worth the time to watch.

Ergo Proxy is 23 episodes.  Out of those only 2 were bad.  Feel free to skip episode #15 Who wants to be in jeopardy? which is a stupid game show episode.  If you passed that one over you’re not missing much (you’ll get a 2 seconds flaskback later of the only relevant info of that show).   And it wouldn’t hurt to skip #19 eternal smile but watch it after you’re through with the series.   It’s all about Pino but it has no bearing on the series as a whole and like #15 breaks the feel of the series.  These two episodes mess up the series as they completely deviate from what the series is about and take you out of the world that they worked so hard to get you hooked into.   The rest of the episodes are a real treat and it’s hard to pick a favorite.
