Star Wars Battlefront: Renegade Squadron (PSP)
October 30th, 2007I have played the Battlefront games since the beginning and they have been a great source for experiencing the Star Wars Universe from the foot soldiers perspective. Star Wars Battlefront: Renegade Squadron is a good game that emulates that experience on a hand held. I have read that it is better than the previous versions of this series on the PSP but I haven’t played any others. I will say that it is a good fps and worth buying. The only downsides are that your turning speed is slow and can get you shot. Also shooting in 3rd person is a little awkward but you can go first person through the scope and it makes things all better. Unlike it’s pc and console brethren the character look doesn’t affect the gameplay. In the other versions you could roll out as a battle droid with shield generators and cannons blazing but here your droid choices are looks only. To offset this they have added abilities like health, speed bonuses etc to make your character your own and they have provided a large array of weaponry and equipment.
Like the other games you do have vehicles and stationary defenses you can man. Also during the course of the battle you will be given the option to play as a special character like Darth Vader, Darth Maul, Luke etc. Big fun. Forcing throwing a lightsaber or force choking enemies just doesn’t get old. Also facing off against opposing special characters is entertaining…lightsabers don’t deflect thermal grenades, sorry Obiwan. And I love the fact that they have the option for Instant Action so you can get a quick game in anytime.
Though Renegade Squadron has a few shortcomings all in all it’s a solid version of the Battlefront series and well worth the money. Nothing beats standing on Hoth wreaking havoc during a lunch hour. Nothing.
May the force be with you on your psp.
