Preview: FF XXII:RE DS The Good, The Bad, The Ugly
October 4th, 2007Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wings for the Nintendo DS like Lucy Ricardo has “got some explaining to do”. FFXII DS has been out in Japan for a few months now. It is Square’s attempt at an rts like game and is said to have been “dumbed down” for the jp audience since theoretically they aren’t as experienced as US players at real time strategy games. I can’t confirm or deny this argument but I can say that it is a very simplistic game turns into a mess quickly. You end up with mixed up squads and a mob about as organized as the one that went after Frankenstein. One faint ray of hope is that supposedly Square is revamping this game into a full rts for US gamers probably along the lines of their Children of Mana DS game if I had to bet. Though Mana isn’t the best rts I’ve ever played, I have a feeling Square will refine that mechanic even further or one would hope as it had pathing issues and slow lumbering gameplay. The graphics of FFXII are average at capturing the style of FFXII of the PS2 version but many times suffer from severe pixelation. Soundtrack is great btw and a high point in this game.
I have a feeling that Square quickly realized that this game was going to get trashed Stateside and decided it had better make some serious changes. The jp version seemed pretty rough to me and I hope they really polish this game to a nice shine for the NA release. I’d hate to see the FFXII franchise tarnished by a crappy game. Keep hope alive!
